The Department of Research was established in January 2008 as the steward of Biomedical and Behavioral research for the nation. The Department aims to pursue science through research in fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to extend healthy life and reduce the burdens of illness and disability. The Department develops and implements programs reflective of the needs to perform world class and state-of-the-art biomedical research in Qatar by pursuing integrated administrative, scientific and training programs by:
Developing and implementing research policies, rules and regulations for the ethical involvement of humans in research and for establishing basic and translational research policies for the state of Qatar.
Serving as a focal point for the ongoing harmonization, streamlining, and optimization of policies and requirements concerning the conduct and oversight of research involving human subjects, tissues, stem cells and genetic/molecular genetics projects.
Encouraging novel strategies and new approaches to stimulate clinical/translational research leading to improved medical care, new diagnostic, preventative, and therapeutic methods; and enhanced quality of life for patients and their families.
Promoting the efficiency and effectiveness of the biomedical research enterprise, in part by facilitating compliance and oversight to achieve important medical discoveries that will improve people’s health and save lives.
Developing and implementing policies, rules and regulations for the ethical and humane use of vertebrate animals in research and for establishing basic, preclinical and translational research policies for the state of Qatar.
Creating the environment to train new leaders who will constitute the professional workforce and intellectual resource of Qatar.
Develop & implement health research Policies and Guidelines,
Establish the National Health Research Priorities and Encourage New Research Strategies and Approaches at basic, clinical, & translational levels
Train new leaders who will constitute the professional workforce and intellectual resources of Qatar & ultimately the whole region
Develop and implement regulations and practices reflective of the needs to perform world class and state-of-the-art biomedical research in Qatar by:
Creating and implementing ethical guidelines & policies to protect and promote the safety of human subjects involved in research
Creating and implementing policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals in Research
Supporting educational programs and monitoring Compliance with the Policies
Research and Training Mission
Goal 1: To Encourage Improved Understanding of the Molecular and Physiologic Basis of Health and Disease, and to Use that Understanding to Develop Improved Approaches to Disease Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention.
Goal 2: To Encourage and Support Improved Understanding of the Clinical Mechanisms of Disease and Thereby to Enable Better Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment.
Goal 3: To Facilitate and Help Generate an Improved Understanding of the Processes Involved in Translating Research into Practice and Use that Understanding to Enable Improvements in Public Health and to Stimulate Further Scientific Discovery.
Strategy 1: Encourage efforts to develop and facilitate access to scientific research resources.
Strategy 2: Facilitate the development of new technologies, tools, and resources.
Strategy 3: Increase the return from population-based and outcomes research
Strategy 4: Establish and expand collaborative resources for clinical research.
Strategy 5: Extend the infrastructure for clinical research
Strategy 6: Support the development of multidisciplinary teams.
Strategy 7: Develop and retain human capital.
