National Cancer Strategy

The Path to Excellence

The 5 years National Cancer Strategy (NCS) was launched in May 2011 by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser and the Minister of Public Health, HE Abdullah bin Khalid Al-Qahtani. The ultimate aim of the strategy is to significantly reduce the burden of cancer in the State of Qatar and to strive to provide cancer care at a standard of excellence, that stands out to the Gulf region and further afield.

As Lord Darzi, Professor the Lord Darzi of Denham eloquently writes within the foreword of the strategy, “This strategy aims to put Qatar’s cancer services at the forefront of international best practice.”

The strategy is based upon international evidence on what excellent cancer care looks like and as a result, the recommendations made are suggested to deliver this with an element of tailoring to suit the needs of Qatar. There are 62 recommendations that the following organisations are responsible and accountable for; Supreme Council of Health, Hamad Medical Corporation and Primary Health Care Corporation.

Close working with other key stakeholders such as the Qatar Cancer Society, Supreme Education Council and other voluntary establishments (Ladies of Harley, Hyaat Support group and Think Pink) will also be fundamental to the success of implementation.

The 62 recommendations fall into these 9 main categories:
  1. Education and Understanding
  2. Prevention
  3. Early Detection
  4. Rapid and Definitive diagnosis
  5. Treatment
  6. Ongoing Care
  7. Measuring Performance
  8. Workforce
  9.  Research

The scope of work is large and complex and needs to be driven by the underlying vision of the Strategy which states that Qatar will have the internationally respected cancer services it deserves.
